Improper or no moisturizing creates hair breakage
Although natural braids styles are typically protective of our hair, ensuring the presence of moisture in our hair will help prevent hair damage that may otherwise occur.
Although your braids or twists may be convenient to have and simple to carry around, lack of proper moisturizing may entail drawbacks such as your hair not growing at your desired pace or excessive shedding when removing your braids or twists. Further damages may involve the loss of edges, split ends, extremely coarse hair, etc.
Retain Moisture
A moderate amount of good hair spray applied to your hair roots every day in the morning and at night is advised. Avoid using alcohol-based products, which can strip the moisture out of your natural hair. Keep your braids or twists tied together or covered while sleeping to keep the moisture. Clean up your braids every once a while if keeping them for over a month to avoid unwanted look due to build up from your hair roots and to enable your hair products/spray to work more effectively on your hair.
At the time of taking down your braids or twists, proceed with care, primarily using your fingers. When using a comb, avoid combs with tight tooths. Also, stay away from using any liquid at this point as this may cause further untangling of your hair which may lead to brakeage.
